イベントレポ : Dokomi

Helloho!
I blame it entirely on tumblr that my con reports get more belated every time, really. I would've switched to tumblr entirely if it wasn't for the shitty search function over there, which virtually prevents you to even find posts on your own blog...

Anyways, on to the con report!

The con
As last year, I stayed at Maddi's place for the weekend and although I really didn't want to go at first and it was mostly her being very persuasive that made me attend Dokomi, I'm glad she made me do it.
It was my second time attending Dokomi, but it really felt like the first, because they moved to a totally different convention site this year. Last time, they used a high school building right in the middle of a suburban residential district. This year, the con took place in a fairgound hall right in the middle of... nowhere. This came with both assets and drawbacks:

+ lovely park and riverside close-by, which provided great locations for photo shoots
   + very spacious
   - it takes about 20min to get there from the closest train station (20min in bright sunlight!)
   - no shops or anything nearby, where you could get refreshments and the like
On our first day, I hated the con site, partly due to the fact that we hardly met anyone in the huge park or the convention site. On the second day, we got used to the convention site (we'd made out the popular spots by then) and looking at the pictures we took now -a month later- I might say I even like it now. If only it wasn't miles from anywhere.
The weather, however, was plain awful. Not it's-raining-cats-and-dogs-awful, but I-think-even-Mordor-is-cooler-than-this-awful. It was so hot, that it would have been uncomfortable in normal clothes (given, I can't handle heat well generally), but in costume the heat was crushing. On the second day, at least it had clouded up, but that only came with stuffy air.

    The costumes
As I've said before, I originally hadn't planned to attend Dokomi and I also didn't really have the time to sew something new, so I decided to wear two old yet beloved costumes:

Saturday - Sheryl Nome [Sagittarius] (Macross Frontier)

I sewed this Sheryl costume back in 2009 and I already have a lot of pretty pictures in it. Yet, I could never bring myself to retire it, so this time was a good opportunity to rewear it. I only fixed a few details (I'm suprised at how neatlyI sewed the bodice! Me! Neatly! Ha!) and wore a new wig (and better make-up), but it makes all the difference. I love the new pictures, especially since Maddi decided to sew a Ranka costume to pair up with me. She's such an adorable Ranka!

    Garnet (Nao Tsukiji illustration)

My Garnet costume isn't quite as old (2010), but by far my favourite cosplay ever. However, it's also my most uncomfortable costume ever, because the sleeves are too tight and I can't move my arms properly. That and the heat and humidity made me question my costume choice more than once that day and I didn't take a single picture that day (nor had I many taken of me). Meh. Nevertheless, I felt very flattered when some people would come up to me saying they've seen this costume on dA or Mexx and loved it and that they're glad to have seen it in person now.

Also, because recently I really love to look at before-and-after pictures of cosplay photographs, have this
comparison shot of one of the pictures I took of Maddi. I spent hours on it, because the building in the background really bugged the hell out of me.

My next convention will be Connichi in September. I've already started on my costumes, if you're interested in WIP pictures, check out my tumblr!
