撮影会 : ペルソナ・アイマス

Hey guys! Long time no see... haha... Seriously, I'm terribly sorry for having neglected my blog for half a year now. But the good news is: I finished my thesis, passed all my exams and graduated! Yay! I don't know yet how busy my new job will keep me, but I'll try my best to give more regular updates from now on.

I started by changing my header and background. Above you see my current personal favourites among my cosplays: Frog Prince and Wonder Woman. I also slightly changed the layout. I think the main texts are easier to read and the different blog entries easier to navigate. At least I hope so.

This post is the first of four that I will write in the next two or three weeks. I figured I should tackle the cons and photo shoots I left uncovered in chronological order, so I'll start with telling you about the two big photo shoots I had in 2012: Persona and The Idolm@ster.

In lovely May 2012 (yes, one year ago), Niklas Liebig, whom I've had the pleasure to work with a couple of times now, asked if he could take pictures of our Velvet Room trio. We, that is Videros, my sister and myself, readily agreed, happy that we got the chance to get more beautiful pictures of these costume we'd only just debuted at Leipzig Bookfair two months earlier. I don't exactly recall how we managed it, but we also found a date we were all free on just as quickly. Finding a location to shoot in, however, was tricky. Of course, a fancy hotel lobby or a limousine would've been awesome, but decidedly outside our financial comfort zone. Niklas suggested the
Federal Ministry of the Interior, with its glass architecture. None of us had ever been there before, so we were quite surprised when we arrived there and found these huge buildings with a lovely little park and playground nearby. You'd think a federal ministry was heavily guarded with tons of security and whatnot, but the whole site is actually quite open and we saw many families with children taking a walk on that sunny day. It encouraged us to get a bit closer to the actual buildings for our pictures. We found out that there was security personnel, after all, but they didn't seem to think of us as a threat, apparently.
All the things we were afraid would go wrong (curious bystanders, strict security, too much/too little sunlight, that is) went smoothly, but we forgot to factor in the wind. It wasn't much of a windy day to speak of, but close to these tall buildings the wind was quite strong. Thus, the difficult part on our (i.e. the cosplayers' side) was to keep our eyes open, our wigs and costumes straight and on Niklas's side to keep the strobe lights from falling.
Here are some of the results:

And an outtake, as well, because everyone loves outtakes, right?

On to the second shoot, which took place about 6 months later:

This photo shoot was different from the first one in many ways:
It was a group photo shoot with 13 cosplayers and 3 photographers.
Months of planning went into it.
It took place in a studio.
Each cosplayer sewed her costume for this primarily photo shoot and none of us had debuted her costume on a convention before.

Let's tackle it chronologically:
Somewhen in autumn 2011, acorea published a weblog searching for cosplayers willing to participate in a quite ambitious group project: She wanted to have a full cast of The Idolm@ster cosplayers with matching costumes. I didn't know much about Idolmaster back then, but I liked the designs and as I usually only cosplay with one, sometimes two partners, I wanted to take part in a big group at least once. Hence, I volunteered. (And watched the anime later that year to get to know the character of Azusa, whom I was assigned to.)
It didn't take long until we had a full cast (although it underwent a lot of changes in the following months), so planning started. Most of it was done by acorea, who did a great job in coordinating everything. It was clear we probably would not managed to set up a photo shoot at a con, so we settled for a studio shoot in September 2012 in Berlin instead.
Mismatching groups are a big pet peeve of mine, so I was thrilled when we agreed on purchasing the same fabrics for everyone. We even matched our eye shadow! We had to cut corners when it came to the boots, though. Most of us were working on a budget and it's pretty much impossible to purchase 13 pairs (minus two for the twins, who wear different shoes) of cheap white boots and not everyone felt fit to sew bootcovers.
It goes without saying that we underwent some troubles and a some point in July 2012, I couldn't even see the whole thing happening anymore. Frankly, I was still expecting someone not showing up or without a full costume when we met up at the day of the shoot. But everyone did! And everything worked! Our top priority, of course, were group pictures, but we also did some solo or pair shots.
The shoot took almost all day and it was quite exhausting. All the girls were awesome, though! It was most interesting to learn how the other girls had tackled their costumes. Everyone has a different way of sewing, after all. I think I learned some new sewing magic tricks that day. Same goes for posing, which I'm really not good at, but watching some of the others act in front of the camera was really inspiring. Most of them I'd only met briefly before at cons, so I was afraid that my social awkwardness would ruin the day for me, but they were all so nice (and funny!). I was even sad when the day was over. (Most of us were able to attend AniMaCo in November, though, so we had some sort of reunion)
As I said, three photographers  were present, but as of now (May 2013), only one has uploaded his pictures, as the other two are still busy with other things. I'm not sure if we'll ever get to see the other pictures, but I hope so. Here are Hasengott's pictures:

衣装製作中 2012年版

Hello-ho! It's time for my annual WIP post before Connichi.

Most of my WIP can bee seen on my tumblr, but once in a while, especially for bigger projects, I think it's nice to have everything neatly in one place, so you can actually see the progress happening.

This year's Connichi (which is the biggest con in Germany, by the way) cosplays are rather simple compared to previous years, mostly because I seriously lack time due to my upcoming graduation.

Nonetheless, both my new cosplays are very dear to me, because I've been looking forward to sewing (and wearing) them for quite some time.

Here's my lineup:

Friday:
Margaret (Persona 4)
Saturday:
 Wonder Woman (Odyssey)
Sunday:
Frog Queen (Original)

MARGARET
Margaret is a costume I've already worn at Leipzig Bookfair. Refer to this post for in-depth information.

WONDER WOMAN
I've been a huge fan of the TV show with Lynda Carter when I was a child (I watched the re-run of the re-run of the re-run in the early 90ies), and loved the Superman movies with Christopher Reeve as well as Tim Burton's Batman movie adaptions (although, admittedly, they totally freaked me out when I first watched them). Live-action TV-series and Hollywood movies -  that was about all of my "exposure" to comics.
Until recently, that is. I think it was last winter when I was re-introduced to US comics through Aera and Boa, who's talking about the Batman series, the DC universe and the reboot got me curious. So I started reading. I began with Batman (pre-reboot; about #655) and found myself really enjoying the dark stories, twisted villains, witty dialogues and the interesting page layouts. I'd been reading manga for so long that I'd almost forgotten that there are other approaches the the medium of comics.
Remembering of my childhood heroine, I started reading Wonder Woman (#600), as well. Neither the storyline nor the art were my cup of tea, but I liked the modern approach the writers had taken. Later I read some earlier WW comics, as well as The New 52 series and was glad to see these were of  a much higher quality.
It wasn't until one fateful day and a Halloween episode of  The Big Bang Theory that I made up my mind about cosplaying Diana.

I would've wanted to cosplay her iconic starry-pants outfit, but I seriously lack the guns to pull off an amazon princess. Therefore, I decided on the Odyssey costume, which comes with long pants and a leather jacket, which not only is a good thing to wear on a con in September, but also would conceal the fact that I'm nowhere nearly as well-toned as Wonder Woman.

Design-wise, I decided to use Alex Garner’s cover artworks as a main reference, because it is more detailed.

On to the actual WIP pictures:

My first try on the pants. Considering this was my first time working with stretch vinyl, they came out quite good. Still, they were nowhere as tight as I wanted them to be, but I also couldn’t sew them any tighter, because then I wouldn’t be able to walk (let alone sit) anymore. Why? Because, although the vinyl I used is 4-way stretch, it’s too thick (read: not stretchy enough) to really do the job.
The failure made me rethink my fabric choice in general.

I was looking for nice, affordable fabric that would arrive in time for me to sew it. Instead, I found a pair of high-waist lycra leggings with a leathery look. Perfect. I cut them up to put in some decorative seams and then sewed them back together (tightening them in the process). It took me almost an hour to unstitch the factory serger seams alone, so I’m a bit unhappy about how the finished seams I put in are almost invisible in pictures. On the other hand, the pants are very comfortable. Extraordinarily so.

The top is made of two layers of 4-way-stretch fabric (because the red one is really thin) and has a shitton of decorative seams, as well. I couldn’t help but feel reminded of Spider-Man’s suit when I looked at the result, but at least these seams are visible, because I used a darker thread.
Putting on the golden straps and bias tape was a pain, because I made them myself out of stretchy golden vinyl. Anyone who's ever sewed a tube out of thick fabric and had to turn it right side out knows what I'm talking about. Nonetheless, I'm quite happy with the result.

The bulletproof bracelets (which are actually gauntlets in this version of her costume) are made of thick craft foam I covered with the red fabric I used for the top. I decided to make the actual bracelets and the glove part seperate pieces, so it’s easier to put them on (they’re closed with hooks and eyes, btw.). The golden pieces of armour are craft foam, as well. I love them!

The belt is made out of craft foam, as well, and covered in multiple layers of golden paint. I wasn’t quite happy with the outcome, though, because it looked too costume-y (even for a cosplay). What I really like about Wonder Woman’s Odyssey costume (in contrast to her signature starry pants costume), is that it looks like something you could actually fight in, so I wanted my costume to look more like real, worn clothing and armour. Therefore, I tried my best at giving the belt a slightly rusty, weathered look. I used the same weathering technique on the other armour parts and the tiara, too. The belt is closed with poppers (covered by the big red star in the back).

While buying the pants was a spontaneous decision, I had wanted to purchase a jacket instead of sewing it right from the start. I felt vindicated when I came across this pleather jacket on ebay, which I bought for 1€. Then, I shortened it, removed the zipper and collar and attached a new collar. I finished it with another set of decorative seams in the back and on the shoulders and by attaching the star shaped gems.

The shoes were another bargain, but much, much more comfortable than they look. I know, high-heels on a  costume meant for combat don't make much sense, but the artwork shows different kind of shoes and -more importantly- I'm not going anywhere wearing skin-tight pants and flats. Nuh-uh. The spur-thingies are craft foam. As are the tiara and the Wonder Woman emblem. Surprise.

Make-up test. On Garner's artworks, Diana's make-up looks rather gothic-y, but I decided to tone it down and go for a more classical, yet dark look.
Oh, and I love the wig. I was a bit sceptical, because I know dark hair not always works for me, but I really think it suits me this time.

The full costume at 100%. Or 99%. The lasso is still missing. I hope the one I ordered will arrive in time. If it doesn't, I have a plan b, which you can see in this picture.

FROG QUEEN
The Frog Queen costume is another costume I've been dying to do. Although I have already done it. Back in 2007, I was part of a cosplay group of original design fairy tale characters as the Frog Prince. The group was awesome, but everytime I looked at my costume, I felt I could’ve done so much more.
Now, 5 years later, I decided to revamp this cosplay. First, I wanted to salvage as much of the original costume as possible, but as it is horribly crafted and I didn’t like the fabrics anymore I chose back then, I instead started all over again from scratch. For the design, I researched different types of male and female fashion from the 17th-19th century and pretty much included everything I liked plus some pin-up style high-waist panties for teh sexiness.

I started with the panties and they were quickly done. They fit nicely and I like the colour of the fabric. I added some leftover lace for fanciness.

The stockings were a pair of tights, which I turned into stockings by cutting them and attaching some elastic. I’m really happy to have found those tights, they were exactly what I needed and I lovelovelove the design!
To cover the elastic I sewed in, I sewed some garters out of this really cute lace I found. The ribbons were a spontaneous purchase in a nearby penny goods store, but I loved the stripey-green one so much I wanted to use it on this costume, so I put little bows on both the garters as well as on the sleeves.

I had some beautiful leftover fabric that I wanted to use, but unfortunately it was pristine white  - much brighter than what I was looking for. I was about to buy new fabric, but Feder convinced me to try out tea dying first - which I did - and it came out great. On the upper left you can see the original colour, on the right is the new, champagne-coloured result. The difference is very subtle, but the shade is perfect now. Later, I also put some more laces on it. They’re leftovers, too, so I could only use them on the front, but the back is covered by the coat, anyway.

I had a hard time finding nice shades of green and red that would go well with each other, but on my second fabric quest I found this beautiful taffeta in light green and a nice, coppery red. The tailcoat is fully lined and hemmed with gold trim. I also love the buttons with the little crowns on it. I hate sewing button holes, by the way.

Some details: I'm not entirely satisfied with the sleeves (although I can't put my finger on why that is), but I love the lace and ribbons.
I hadn’t planned to use lace on the neckline, but when I found this one, I couldn’t help but to put it everywhere - same goes for the golden trim.
The fake pockets and the... er... bar in the back (no idea what they're called in English) are made out of leftover brocade.

The crown is one of the few things I salvaged from my old costume (see left), but I spraypainted it to a more brass-y look and also changed the fabric. Then, I added the veil (which used to be the jabot for my old costume, by the way) and pearls. Threading pearls is an oddly calming pasttime.
The whole thing is still abit lopsided, so I will work on it just a bit more.

The gloves and detachable cuffs have been part of my earlier Frog Queen costume, as well. The gloves aren’t made by me, but a hand-me-down from my great-aunt. They’re actually bridal gloves (I was told). I added new buttons (to match those on the tailcoat) and -surprise- even more lace to the cuffs. They’re easily my favourite part of the costume.
On the right you can see the accessory: A neckband (made out of the same fabric as the pants; the "gem" is an old button I painted) and two rings. I'd have fitting earrings, as well, but they'd be hidden by the wig, so I'm not going to wear them

Make-up: I had loads of green body paint along the edges of my face down to my jawline to give it a more fantasy-like feel. Unfortunately, 40% of the make-up became all but invisible due to the unexpectedly good lighting on my balcony, another 50% are covered by the wig. Oh, well…
Wig: The wig is actually my Garnet wig, which I sewed together out of two wigs (see WIP here) last year. I just slightly pulled it up to give it more volume in the back.

This is the almost finished costume. I still need to work on the crown (see above) and I want to glam up the shoes.

Phew.

It feels somewhat surreal to have all costumes finished three weeks before the actual con, but I certainly won't complain!

ブログ移動+イベントレポ:ブックフェアー

Hello everyone!

Welcome to "The Velvet Room", which is -much to some people's disappontment, I suppose- not a night club, but the title of my new blog, which I named after the infamous Velvet Room in the Persona videogame series.

Wait- "New blog"?
Yes. And no.
I created this blog a few days ago, and this is my first post in it. However, you'll have noticed that this blog already contains a good share of posts. This is because I've migrated all cosplay related posts from my old blog at Livejournal to this place.

Why bother?
I've been wanting to start a new cosplay-only blog for some time now. First; I thought of simply setting all my personal posts in my old journal to "private", so only the cosplay posts would remain public. Livejournal has changed a lot since I first started my blog there (7 years ago...?) and some of the new functions drive me nuts. On the other hand, Livejournal is so terribly out-fashioned in terms of interface and usabilty that I went looking for some other place ... and ended up with blogger, because it's add-free and easy to use - while still allowing the user a lot of creative freedom.

So, this blog is...?
A cosplay blog, in which I'll post my con and photoshoot reports. WIP posts are mostly to be seen at my tumblr, but I might post them here, as well.

And now?
On to the actual post: My con report for Leipzig Bookfair!

The con
As every year, my sister Melli and I attended Leipzig Bookfair (March 15th~18th), and like almost every year, we only found time to actually be there on Saturday. Which has its pros and cons. On the pro side, you'll meet a lot of people, on the con side, you'll meet more than you ever wanted. Read: It's really crowded and noisy in the main halls and people are literally tripping over each other. This, of course is mainly because Leipzig Bookfair isn't really a convention, but a ... book fair, duh. Therefore, most people attending it are bibliophiles, who have nothing to do with manga/anime, let alone cosplay. For years, though, the fair has attracted many, many cosplayers, because it's considerably cheap and hosts a couple of masquerades. So nowadays, some poeple actually come to see the costumes.
This year wasn't as full as last year (at least that's how I percieved it), but still very, very crowded. It also doesn't help that some poeple think it's a good idea to bring xbox huge costumes (with gigantic wings, props or hoop skirts) into the crowded halls. It also was unusually warm and sunny this year, so we spent most of our time in a narrow, shadowy corridor of sorts and only left it to take pictures. Which means that we hardly saw anything of the actual fair and only met half the people we wanted to meet.
We did, however, get to take some really nice pictures. We had discovered an almost deserted area in one of the smaller halls last year and went there again. The lighting there was perfect and the setting very fitting for our costumes.

The costumes
We've been planning to cosplay the Velvet Room sisters Margaret and Elizabeth for some time now and were very happy to find that Titschipoo, Nina and Videros were already planning a group for Leipzig Bookfair. Our joy even grew when Videros dropped his original plan to cosplay Izanagi and joined (and completed) our Velvet Room group as Theodore.
Luckily enough, we all live in Berlin and could go on  fabric quests together, because we wanted our group to be well-coordinated. We even bought our wigs at the same store, as well as our contacts.
Both my sister's Elizabeth costume and my Margaret costume were sewn by me, but I had help from Titschipoo, who helped me with the appliquéd circles on Elizabeth's dress.

In the end, our group consisted of
Nina as Aegis
Titschipoo as Metis
Konzertjunky as Mitsuru
Videros as Theodore
Patapata as Elizabeth
Myself as Margaret

Please have a look at their galleries, they're incredibly talented cosplayers!

Margaret (Persona 4)

The most difficult part about sewing it was to find nice fabric and I ended up using quilted lining. I like the result, but, well, wearing a fully wadded and lined costume on a warm and sunny day certainly wasn't the brightest idea. The next problem I faced was the pattern, as Margaret's costume is something between a coat and a dress and I've never sewn anything like it before. Once I figured everything out, it went rather smoothly, though. The big buttons are actually wooden weels for model making which I painted and attached to the coat with velcro, so I could easily take them off for washing and ironing.
Here are some WIPs from my tumblr: 1   2   3

↓Pictures in the 1st row taken by me and my sister (2nd picture)
↓↓Pictures in the 2nd row taken by MissKrone

The pictures
As I said, we took some really nice pictures, but sadly I didn't get to take even a single shot of Nina's and Titschipoo's most epic Aegis and Metis costumes. Nor could I take a picture of our group.
That didn't stop me from taking a lot of solo shots, though. Nor from asking my sister or Maddi to take some of me. This is my favourite:

You can also see all the pictures I took at Leipzig Bookfair in my gallery at Animexx (German, no registration needed.): Blue Velvet

So this is it for now, I hope you enjoyed it.

イベントレポ:Connichi, MMC

Thought my always belated con reports couldn't get any more late? Wrong!
Beside my usual busyness (Master thesis...), this year's Connichi was very late in September and MMC very early in October, giving me little to no time to write any journals.
Thus, I've decided to write one big entry covering both cons. My costumes were mostly the same, after all.

Let's start with Connichi.

The con
Some of you might remember that last year's Connichi was pretty dissappointing to me for several reasons, so this year things could only get better. And it did.
Reasons?
  1. They added a new building (or wing) to the convention site and the new space planning added to a lot less crowded rooms and hallways.
  2. For the first time, Eva accompanied us and, being the non-cosplayer she is, brightened the mood with hilarious snide comments. Thank you for reminding me how ridiculous cosplay problems can be!
  3. I followed my own advice and simply didn't stress myself or others out. No pressure, just fun. It worked.

The costumes
No big surprises here, because I already wrote about them in my WIP entry, so some parts of the costume desciptions will be copypasta.

Friday - Fuu Hououji (Magic Knight Rayearth OVA)

We decided to re-wear the Rayearth costumes, because they make a great group cosplay and-comfy as they are- are perfect for con Fridays. I highly enjoyed cosplaying with Maddi and my sister again and since Eva took a lot of beautiful pictures that day, I think that now I can retire this costume without any regrets.

Below are some of the photos Eva took ↓
Again, our group: Maddi as Fuu, my sister as Umi and myself as Fuu.

Connichi 2011 Connichi 2011 Connichi 2011

Saturday - Terra (Final Fantasy VI)

Our long awaited Final Fantasy VI group. While I love how my sisters came out, I'm rather dissatisfied with my own costume. Or maybe "dissatisfied" isn't the right word - it looks good, really, it's just very far from what I'd originally wanted it to be. The most obvious difference: No shoulder armour. I did make them (Proof), but when I put them on, I just felt bulky and wrong, so I went for the strapless version. Luckily, Terra has a gazzilion of different designs, with and without armour.
Maddi's Relm costume, of course, was flawless and her prettiness was dazzling. Next to her and my colourful Kefka sister, I felt very plain, but nonetheless I liked our goup.

↓ First was picture taken by Rose, all the others by Eva.

Sunday (WCS) - Howl Jenkins (Howl's Moving Castle)

Sunday - WCS day. As usual, this was the most stressfull day. To be honest: I'm not sure if it's worth it. This year was comparatively easy going, because we'd decided beforehand not to use any giant props but instead concentrate on telling a story in our performance (for details see below).
Howl was very comfortable to wear and I was especially grateful for this cosplay decision, when it got really cold and rainy on Sunday. Our little Howl group was quite popular, propably mostly due to the movie's high profile. And yes, that's my sister as Markl. When I realised that I had still some time left, I decided to sew her a Markl cosplay. It took only one day but I really like the outcome.

WCS
This year's WCS prelims were a bit different than the last years'. Usually, the teams simply submitted their applications a few weeks before the con, but because more and more teams wanted to participate each year, leaving the organisers flodded with applications, they changed the whole procedure and decided to hold a pre-prelim of sorts, an interview. Before that, all applicants were asked to submit pictures of their costumes and themselves and to answer some questions ("When did you start cosplaying?", "What part of your costume do you like most?", "Have you ever been feautured in a magazine?" yaddayaddayadda). This is where things didn't go they way the organisers expected it: Apparently a lot of people couldn't be bothered to fill out the application from or to show up at the pre-prelim, so instead of the expected 50-60 teams, there were only 21 and the organisers decided to drop the interview, seeing no need to further reduce the numbers. I read a lot about how people (read: contestants in the prelims) were mad about all the fuss with the portfolios and the interview, but if you asked me, I'm glad they changed the procedure this year. If people are too lazy to invest some time and effort into the application, how'd you know they will manage to properly finish their costumes and send in all the necessary materials if they actually made it through the prelims and became Team Germany? If the new, more complex procedure resulted in fewer spontaneous and half-assed applications, then it's serving its purpose.

Our team got number 11, if I recall correctly, so we were pretty much in the middle of the stage show. Knowing that we wouldn't have much time to rehearse together (because we're living in two different cities), we had decided on a more simplistic skit in which we wanted to retell the story of "Howl's Moving Castle".
Turns out that was a good decision, because -boy- there went so much wrong on stage fo most teams. Sure, there's always a cosplayer who trips, forgets his or her lines (or choreography) or loses some part of the costume, but this year there was something really strange going on; multiple teams had major wig/costume/prop problems on stage.
We (rather: I... again) messed up some things as well. Right at the beginning, when Maddi went on stage, she accidentally dropped her red scarf. That red scarf, it seems, had been a some kind of sign stimulus for me, because now that it was missing, I not only missed my cue to show up on stage, but I also forgot to take off Sophies braid later on (which was supposed to show her transformation from old to young) and just stood there for awfully long 5 seconds. My feather coat got tangled up so it took me ages to put it on. Then, Maddi tripped as she was chasing Howl and nearly sprained her ankle.
All these mistakes, however, went completely unnoticed by the audience, so the applause we got was quite overwhelming.

Here's the video (taken by therealbigmek):

(the first half is our skit, the second half is the team after us.)

I originally planned to use the video Eva took (better colours and focus) and even to put in subtitles, but apparently my computer is too old to handle HD videos...

Back then, I thought we did great; watching the video again right now, I'd say we were pretty mediocre and simply benefited from the movie's popularity. Nevertheless, I like our performance. After the show quite a few people came up to us saying we made them want to re-watch the movie or that they even teared up a little. It seems like people who liked the movie also liked our skit, which is what I was hoping for, so I'm pretty pleased with myself.
We didn't get into the top 3, of course, not with the skit and costumes simple like that. I'd have loved to know how high we scored, however, but we were told that the judges didn't award points and only appointed the three best teams (if not by scores, then by gut instinct?). That fact made me rage a little inside, because that means they didn't have any scoring tables to begin with, which is unacceptably unprofessional in my opinion.
I was very happy for the team that got 3rd place, because their skit was really inventive and their costumes good.
The team that got 2nd place had the most gogreous costumes, but personally I didn't like their performance, because it was a lot of talking and lame fighting.
The team that won... was a surprise. They'd shown a very funny skit. Their humour wasn't my cup of tea and their costumes (Ranma 1/2) were also more on the simple side, but the audience LOVED them. They differ greatly from the former German teams, so I'm genuinely curious as to how they might change the always drama-heavy German prelims and the finals in Japan.

To sum up my Connichi 2011 experience:

+ cosplaying with Maddi & my sister ♥ ♥
+ Eva
+ Awesome cosplays: Feder as Harley Quinn & Nina as Skull Kid
+ meeting Whitebutterfly & Blackbutterfly and actually find some time to chat♥
+ MTV Game Awards emeriti (XD) meet-up
+ shiny, new dealer's room (although I hardly bought anything)
+ foreign convention panel on Friday
+ nice weather (except for Sunday)

- people leaving their garbage behind at the park (again)
- missed Aigue-Marine's Calla cosplay on Sunday
- didn't take any pictures... at all
- no pictures from MissKrone... at all

Oh, there's one more thing I have to share with you ↓

Yup, that's Eva dubbing her keychain Elmo at Connichi Sunday. This masterpiece had us gigglesnorting the whole train ride back to Berlin.

The con
To make things short: Mega Manga Con was propably my best con this year. I met lots of people, took beautiful pictures, we had great weather and overall
the con had a very nice stress free atmosphere. This was, however, not due to the con itself. No, the con was horrible. Ill-informed helpers; inexplicable, spontaneous
staff decisions; missing informations and so on. Seriously, it's been a long time since I attended a con this poorly organised.
It's solely thanks to some wonderful people and the great weather that MMC turned out to be such a great experience this year.

The costumes
See above.
As I said before, I didn't have much time, so I only sewed new costumes for Saturday: Kongiku and Yuzuruha from Muramasa: Demon Blade

Friday - Howl Jenkins (Howl's Moving Castle)

Maddi and I had originally planned to wear our Majokko costumes again, but the cold weather made us rethink that decision.
Wearing our Howl's Moving Castle costumes instead was great: We finally managed to take a few more pictures, were well-equipped against the cold and the comfy costumes proved perfect for a relaxing first con day.

Saturday - Yuzuruha & Kongiku (Muramasa - The Demon Blade)

These two fox girls were already on my list for last year's Animaco, but due to little time I dropped the project, because I didn't want the costumes to be rushed. This year, I wanted this cosplay no matter what. Some kimono sewing experience from my Yuuko cosplay came in handy, but in the end big parts of the costumes were still done via trial and error, especially the ears and my wig. Speaking of which: I spent three nights trying three times to style my wig and was about to give up when suddenly my sister discovered some hidden wig styling qualities. The hair loopies aren't exactly flattering on me, but I still love the outcome. I'm also very pleased with my fabric choices. I used satin for the kimonos (turned inside out and fully lined) and tafetta for the obis and underskirts. The ears and my tail are made out of fake fur, coloured with copic markers; I like the fluffy little monsters.
If I might say so myself: I think my sister and I looked great together (even though neither of us felt as sexy as we were supposed to be) and my day was perfect, when Amapola agreed to take some pictures at twilight.

Sunday - Terra (Final Fantasy VI)

Despite the cold weather, we decided to wear our Final Fantasy VI costume again, because we thought the autumn foliage would make a nice setting for the colourful costumes - which it did.
This time around, I didn't feel as uncomfortable next to Maddi and my sister as at Connichi, propably because I was busy shivering.
All the freezing paid off, though, because both MissKrone and Franky took some great pictures of our group.

To sum up my Mega Manga Con 2011 experience:

+ cosplaying with Maddi & my sister ♥ ♥
+ Chatting and meeting a lot of people
+ cold but sunny weather
+ stressless
+ awesome photo shoot at twilight
+ made a bargain at the dealers' room

- lousy management
- aggressive kids at the con site
- ugly con site
- no Eva

I'd love to write an entry covering all my cosplays this year and my plans for next year, but work and uni propably won't allow it.
